Family Reunification in Poland 2026: Temporary Residence Permit for Your Spouse and Children

Family Reunification in Poland – How to Bring Your Spouse or Children Legally (2026 Guide)

If you already live in Poland and hold a Temporary Residence Card (TRC), you may be able to legalize the stay of your spouse and children through the Family Reunification Temporary Residence Permit.
The correct procedure depends on where your family members are currently located. There are several legal options available, and choosing the wrong one can significantly delay the process.

Option 1. Your Family Member Is Already in Poland

If your spouse or child is already legally staying in Poland, they can usually apply for a Temporary Residence Permit for Family Reunification without leaving the country.

Main requirements

The principal applicant (the family sponsor) should generally meet the following conditions:
  • hold a Temporary Residence Permit that is valid for at least one more year at the moment of application;
  • have legally resided in Poland for at least two years on consecutive Temporary Residence Permits (as required by Article 159 of the Foreigners Act);
  • demonstrate sufficient and stable income;
  • have accommodation for the family.

Income requirements (2026)

As of 2026, the minimum disposable monthly income is:
  • 1,010 PLN for the main applicant;
  • 823 PLN for each additional family member.
Please note that these amounts apply after accounting for housing expenses. Rent, mortgage-related housing costs, or even utility bills for an owned property are taken into consideration when assessing whether the income requirement is satisfied.
Each case should therefore be calculated individually before submitting the application.

Option 2. Your Family Member Is Outside Poland

If your spouse or child is currently abroad, there are two possible legal solutions.

Option A. Apply for Family Reunification While Abroad

In many situations, the family member can apply for a Family Reunification Temporary Residence Permit before travelling to Poland.
This solution is based on Article 159 of the Polish Foreigners Act, provided that the sponsoring family member meets the statutory requirements, including:
  • residence in Poland on consecutive Temporary Residence Permits;
  • at least two years of legal residence on those permits;
  • the current permit being issued for a period of at least one year;
  • sufficient income and accommodation.
Once the permit is granted, the family member can enter Poland and collect their residence card after completing the required formalities.
This option often allows families to avoid unnecessary intermediate immigration steps.

Option B. Schengen Visa → Poland → Family Reunification Application

Another common solution is:
  1. obtain a Schengen visa;
  2. travel legally to Poland;
  3. submit a Family Reunification Temporary Residence Permit application while staying legally in Poland.
Whether this pathway is available depends on the individual circumstances, immigration history, visa type, and current legal status. Therefore, it should always be assessed before travel.

Which Option Is Best?

There is no universal solution for every family.
The correct strategy depends on factors such as:
  • where your family member is currently located;
  • the type and validity of your residence permit;
  • how long you have legally lived in Poland;
  • your income;
  • your housing situation;
  • the nationality of your spouse or child.
Choosing the right procedure from the beginning can save several months of waiting and help avoid unnecessary refusals or requests for additional documents.
